How Much Gold Is In Fort Knox

Fans of the old James Bond movies will almost certainly identify Auric Goldfinger as one of the best villains in the movie franchise. In the movie, Goldfinger tried to penetrate Fort Know in Kentucky and steal all of the gold there. Of course, Mr. Bond would never allow such a thing to happen, and all that glorious gold remained intact, which is not what can be said for Goldfinger. If you have seen that movie, and even if you haven’t, one burning question you may have is, how much gold is in Fort Knox?

Where is Fort Knox?

Before we get to that magical figure, and it is indeed a big one, let’s first learn a little bit about the history of Fort Knox. The depository was officially opened way back in 1937 in the great state of Kentucky, just south of Louisville, and is now considered one of the most secure facilities in the world. There are some who would even suggest that it is more heavily guarded than the White House, although that may not be the case when the President is actually at home. The gold that is stored there actually belongs to the United States, and is just one of the country’s many assets.

Fort Knox Storage

The amount of gold that has been stored there has changed over the years, and some conspiracy theories actually believe that the building is empty right now, serving as a smokescreen for the actual location of the gold owned by the US. This is a claim that is denied by the US Mint, but what else are they going to say? The largest store of gold at any one time in Fort Knox was in 1941, when there was 649.6 million ounces of the stuff in place. The amount that is stored there now is considerably less than that rather lofty figure.

Fort Knox Security

The location of Fort Knox was specifically chosen with security in mind. The Appalachian Mountains protect it on the east side, while the distance from the ocean was chosen to repel potential sea attacks. The construction materials used for the facility make it virtually impenetrable, and there are a series of security measures in place that would make it just about impossible to get through the front gate without a special invite. There is also the military presence to consider, which is a deterrent in and of itself.

All of this brings us back to the question that brought you here in the first place: how much gold is in Fort Knox? It is believed that there are currently 147.3 million ounces of gold being stored at the Fort Knox facility, which at today’s gold values puts is at about $261.6 billion. That is a staggering amount of gold, and it’s worth noting that the amounts removed are generally only in tiny quantities so that the purity of the gold can be checked. The next question we all want to know, is what could we buy with just one bar of gold from Fort Knox?
